Guide Right & Kappa League
Guide Right
Guide Right, the national service program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Steward and formally proposed at the fraternity’s Twelfth Grand Chapter. Brother Steward, a Past Western Province Polemarch, is recognized as the founder of the National Guide Right movement.

Following the establishment of the St. Louis Alumni Chapter in 1921, Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters were tasked with exploring ways to better support the development of youth in the Black community. Their work focused on creating a meaningful and practical response to the challenge of educational underachievement.

From this effort, Brother Steward proposed Guide Right as a structured program of guidance designed to help high school students identify and pursue productive career paths. Since its inception, Guide Right has emphasized scholarship support for talented students with financial need, while also exposing young people to a wide range of professional and career opportunities.

Guide Right is the oldest, most successful mentoring program for young people of color, having mentoried over 500,000 young people.

Today, Guide Right is an umbrella program to support boys earlier in the education pipeline. The Columbus (OH) Alumni Chapter's Guide Right effort focuses on fourth grade boys at East Linden Elementary School.

Kappa League

The signature program of Guide Right is the Kappa Leadership Development League (Kappa League).

Kappa League was founded on Thursday, February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at Alain LeRoy Locke High School. Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the 56th Grand Chapter in 1970.

Kappa League is a program for the educational, occupational and social guidance of male students in grades 7th-12th. We focus on training young men for leadership, achievement, and service in every field of human endeavor. We emphasize personal development, academic achievement, and college/career prep.
The Columbus Alumni Chapter’s Kappa League program is led by Brother Virgil White II. Kappa Leaguers usually convene twice monthly on the second (in person) and fourth (virtual) Sundays of the month.
